In 2004 the number of tourist arrivals to Laos
was more than 850,000, an increase of 40 % compared
to 2003. • The National Tourism
Strategy has been finalized and submitted to the
government for approval. Thank you for your input

• Visa exemptions for Lao and Thai
citizens to Thailand and Laos became effective
in December 2004.
• The LNTA and SNV have produced a draft
tourism development plan for Houaphanh Province.
According to this document, Houaphanh is expected
to become one of Lao PDR’s top tourism destinations

• The elephant viewing tower in Ban Na,
Phou Khao Kouay NPA will be completed in February
2005. Contact Klaus Schwettman for more information.

• The phrasebook “English Language
for Eco-guides” is now available from the
LNTA. Please contact Mr. Khanthaveexay (Bae, 4th
floor, LNTA) to order copies of this excellent
resource.

you would like copies of the booklet “Do’s
and Don’ts in Laos”
• Be sure to join our meeting next month.
The LNTA will distribute samples of new tourist
maps for Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Khammouane
and Champasak Provinces.
• Currently, the number of hotels in Lao
PDR is 145 and there are 799 guest-houses. The
total numbers of rooms is 13,414 nationwide.
• The LNTA-ADB Mekong Tourism Development
Project has identified a number of new community-based
tourism ( CBT ) products in Luang Namtha, Champasak,
Khammouane and Luang Prabang. Some CBT tours currently
in the trial phase include: Luang Namtha
- Trekking and Camping in the Nam Ha NPA
Luang Prabang
- Trekking in Chomphet and Ngoi Districts
Khammouane
- Cave Exploration and Trekking in the Phou
Hin Poun NPA
Champasak
- Bird watching and Trekking in the Xe Pian
